257 || How to Thrive in the Refining Fire of Bringing Your Dream into the Public Eye || Ainsley Britain

Have you been keeping your dream to yourself?

Putting your work out into the world is an act of vulnerability. Writers know this. Artists know this. Dreamers, too, know what it feels like to share something beyond your small, trusted circle and afterwards experience a vulnerability hangover.

IF YOU’VE QUESTIONED WHETHER YOU CAN STOMACH OTHERS POKING HOLES IN YOUR DREAM, THIS IS THE EPISODE FOR YOU!

It’s normal to feel some fear as you publicly launch your gifts and dreams since they are, after all, a part of you. You’ve been holding this “baby” close to your chest for some time now, but it’s grown, and you’ve grown, and you know you can’t keep holding it so tight. It needs to be let out to live and breathe in the real world, but that letting out can feel more exposing than most of us prefer, especially when a dream is still in its infancy.

As a Christian, the good news is that your identity rests in something (someone!) more solid and trustworthy than the reactions you’ll receive via social media comments. After all, you are a daughter of the King!

My guest Ainsley Britain is an author, podcast host, and Enneagram coach, who helps young adults embrace their confidence, date healthy, and discover their identity in Christ. In this episode she shares what it was like to take her private writings and expose them to the publishing industry, editors, and to the audience she seeks to serve. We actually talk very little about the details of publishing a book (although some of my other episodes discuss it here, here, and here). Instead, Ainsley shares about the mental and spiritual battle of learning to receive praise and criticism with an eye toward Christ.

We also discuss:

  • One painful but necessary part of making your dream more public

  • Working from overflow rather than exhaustion and the value of being interruptible

  • Practical tips on how she plans out her writing milestones and related tasks, even with a baby at home

Scripture:

Praise be to the God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His great mercy he has given us
new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.
